It was a rainy and gloomy day on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. We spent the first half of the day in local hot springs, enjoying a moment of relaxation. It was great to have this bit of down time, as our travelling days are usually filled from sunrise to sunset. It makes a nice change to be able to slow down for a little while.
Still, we were determined to explore the area further in the afternoon. In between the frequent showers and drizzle we managed to find a couple of spots that attracted our attention. Hence the title of the photo. One of them was near a town of Kuaotunu. What made me get up and take my camera gear out were the rocks in the foreground and especially the misty layer of mountains just over the horizon. I loved the fast moving clouds above too.
It was a perfect kind of scene for a long exposure and I promptly set up my tripod and camera to do just that. With showers passing overhead and wind blowing drops onto my lens and filters, it took a while to find a four minute window of relative calm to take this photo. It made the afternoon exploration even more worthwhile. Soon after the heavy rain returned and we settled for the rest of the day in the local pub for a spot of dinner and a brew or two.
