Not far away from the very popular Skogafoss is another waterfall that can be considered one of the hidden gems in Iceland. That waterfall is called Kvernufoss. It is located at the end of a gorge where it hides somewhat from a completely open view, although you can possibly just see it from the ring-road. It can be reached after only a short hike and, as an added bonus: one can also walk behind the falls (protective rain gear is highly recommended).
We did not encounter one person on the way there and back, which is very contrasting to the numbers of people that were only about a kilometre away admiring the power of Skogafoss. This is merely an observation on the contrast in popularity between two locations very close to each other and not a criticism of any kind.
The canyon leading up to Kvernufoss makes for a satisfying short walk with only a couple of steeper sections to get through. The views are superb and I have a wider photo from the canyon that I might post in the future. The moment you walk into the gorge, the sound of the waterfall in the distance entices you to follow the path further in. When we first glimpsed the fall it seemed really small, obscured by the canyon walls. As we got closer, the fall grew larger, the sound got much louder and combined with the energy of the water falling from about a 30m drop we could really feel its power as we walked right up to it.
Layered cliffs and rocks provided wonderful study into various details and hues. That made the setting for Kvernufoss especially appealing to me. The summer greens also added a lovely contrast, and as you might already know, I like silky smooth water for my waterfall photos and this is just like that - a 30 second exposure to produce that silkiness that I was looking for. There are many approaches to photographing falls depending on your own artistic vision. My preferred mood for waterfall scenes is the dreamy ethereal look that I hope I was able to present here.
