The Grand Canyon Track in the Blue Mountains is a fantastic hike which allows to explore the rainforest and follow the path along one of the deep, dark slot canyons that can be found in the national park. At the lowest part of the track you are able to descend right down to the canyon floor at the bottom of the valley. You can really feel like you are going into the heart of the Blue Mountains and the atmosphere is fantastic.
There are many magnificent creeks, waterfalls and rock formations along the way. The rainforest is lush and beautiful, even during the summer months. I took this photo at just about the lowest point of the circuit. What you see is pretty much where the canyon exits into relatively open space. If you followed it along from here, the walls would soon starting to close around and over the top of you.
I liked this particular spot because the canyon walls opened up enough to let some of the golden sunlight through and shine on the "slot" between the cliffs. I loved the lush vegetation of the rainforest as well and there was enough water in the creek to give me a bit of a reflection. It was also well sheltered from the wind, which allowed for wonderful texture of the bottom of the creek to come through in the foreground. I carefully used the polarising filter here to ensure that I got the right balance of reflections and detail in the water.
There were few other hikers around but we did get a lot of moments to enjoy the nature by ourselves as well. Other than the visual aspects, I love the sounds of the rainforest. The birds, insects, waterfalls and every now and again wind caressing the tops of the trees high above make for a great symphony. I hope this photo can bring you a little closer to that magnificent feeling of standing there, surrounded by this beautiful scenery.
