During our recent trip we stopped for a couple of days in the Grampians National Park in Victoria. This interesting mountain range marks the western end of the Great Dividing Range that stretches along the east coast of Australia, from far north east Queensland to western Victoria. We explored the central part of The Grampians thoroughly and looked for photographic opportunities along the way.
This is the view near a spot called Reeds Lookout towards the western ranges and Victoria Valley. When we arrived it was fairly overcast and the sunset did not look promising at all. I decided to stay around anyway and it turned out to be a great decision. Just when it seemed that nothing would eventuate, the clouds started to light up gently with red sunset tones. It was not a blazing sunset by any means but it was a beautiful surprise and I loved the subtle colours in the sky and also the their glow reflected in the foreground rocks.
I was also a little worried before the evening that the smoke that started to drift in from burn-offs on nearby fields would make everything very hazy and unclear. Luckily it did not impact the scene too much. You can just see traces of the smoky haze around the mountains in the far distance on the horizon. I think that in the end it added a lovely subtle fog effect that separated the last mountain range from the valley below.
The colours did not last very long and I was only able to take a few more photos before it became all gloomy again. I was very happy though, that I stayed a little longer after the sunset when I could have easily decided there is nothing here and returned to the hotel. It shows that if you can have a little bit of patience and perseverance, nature will reward you for it sooner or later.
