Paddy's Castle

Paddy's Castle is a sandstone outcrop in the middle of Victoria Valley in the Grampians National Park in Australia. It has fantastic 360 degree views over the entire valley and we literally felt like sitting of top of the world surrounded by nature in every direction. We discovered this locations as we were traversing the mountain range and we returned there later for the sunset.

I think I must be the ultimate cloud "un-whisperer". How many times have I arrived somewhere with great clouds hanging about and excellent potential for a colourful sunset, only to have the clouds disappear within an hour of my arrival. The same happened here. I was just getting set up for some stunning golden hour photos before all clouds just drifted away. I took this photo about ten minutes before sunset and the moment the sun went down there were almost no clouds left in the sky.

I did like the lovely warm light that the setting sun was shining on the surrounding rocks and decided to make the most of it. The rocks looked truly alive with all their textures and details dancing in front of my eyes in this light. I also noticed some beautiful spotlights in the valley below as the sunlight was coming though the last remnants of cloud cover just over the horizon.

Sitting up there, right over the valley, felt indeed like looking out of a castle. It was my favourite location that we discovered in the Grampians. There was no one else around and no sound of any civilisation. If we ever make it back to this picturesque range, this will definitely be one location that we would like to re-visit. It was a wonderful peaceful evening that we spent on the "castle" and I was also able to pre-visualise a number of different compositions for potential future sunsets.
