I am staying for this photo in the karst mountain landscape of Yangshuo County. This was taken on our second day there and as you can see, the weather did not improve too much. It did not really bother us too greatly, other than not being able to see this beautiful area in some great morning or afternoon light. On this day we went to explore the rural countryside surrounding the town of Yangshuo. Luckily, we had the foresight to pack some rain gear with us for the trip and it came really handy out here. I was walking and taking photos under the cover of umbrella for the entire morning. We had our waterproof boots on and that kept our feet nice and dry. Most of the other people in our group got a bit wet. At least it was calm and not too cold, which made it easier to get through the day.
The countryside walk took us through the local rice fields, nested between the limestone pinnacles that are such an iconic feature of this region. It was already past the harvest time and most of the fields were being cleaned up and prepared for winter. Still they provided plenty of textures and interest for photography. Being able to see this kind of landscape for the first time in my life only added to the experience.
Once again I had my monochromatic vision switched on. I think this mood works very well for the rainy scenery and I also allow myself to be a little extra creative in terms of processing in monochrome. I could for example, push the sky just a little bit more to give it a more dramatic presence and still keep it real (I hope). I definitely wanted the scene to be dark and gloomy. I want the viewer to feel like they need to reach for an umbrella or having to retreat to a drier place. That is how we felt out there and it was actually great fun to walk through the rain while checking if the camera bag is still dry and keeping the camera itself out of the rain.
