Rural Living

When walking through the rural areas around Yangshuo in China, I was able to find a couple of interesting compositions along the way. I especially liked this spot with the path leading past and wrapping around the shabby looking structure on the right. You can also see how much water there is on the path and how wet it was. Lucky we were prepared with good shoes, umbrella and camera rain gear.

I liked this scene because of the light shining through along the path and from behind the buildings. I liked the buildings themselves too with their brick texture and a slight touch of desolate mood. In my mind these older structures fitted with the overall ambiance on that day. There were a lot of newer houses around but they just looked like they could belong anywhere else. This to me felt like it belonged there and enhanced the character of the village.

The foliage and rainy weather really made the mood special for this kind of photo. You could just imagine someone running home from the bus after coming back from the market in town, splashing water around, or may be some mischievous children running amok in the rain. We really felt this old time kind of feeling in the air. I worked in post processing to bring out some of the mood and I also felt that there was a real cinematic quality about the image as I kept working on it.

This photo and the last three that I posted were all processed with very much the same techniques and steps along the way. I hope that gives them a kind of unity and continuity that tell a story of China away from major cities, or at least as much as we were able to see of it.
