I Dream in Colour

The photo that beings the journey back to our long trip last year comes from a reasonably remote part of eastern Poland near Belarus border. I photographed this sunset over looking Augustow Canal - an old waterway built for political and economic reasons back in the 19th century. Nowadays it is a tourist attraction, which offers picturesque views along its twisted way through the countryside.

We stayed in a small homestead that had access directly to the canal via a small pier and I was able to just to walk a few meters from the house to find this wonderful spot. Having beautiful calm weather around was fantastic and getting some sunset colours was a great bonus as well. It was not easy though, to find a good composition. I wanted to include the reflections in the water to find symmetry in the composition but I was just too close the the trees and grasses on the other side of the canal. Even at 16mm it was not wide enough to have the trees fully reflected in the foreground. I found a good "compromise" though that I felt was going to give me the scene that I was looking for.

This was my first opportunity of the trip to get out there purely for landscape photography and I studied the area beforehand to have some ideas ready once the evening arrived. I deliberately did not move the camera further to the right towards the sunset. The landscape there was not quite as interesting and the foreground would have been a lot more busy and distracting. I also would not get the interesting bare trees into the frame. They for me complete the composition and anchor the right hand side of the frame.

I have not developed any photos for over half a year and it was interesting to get back into it. I definitely have a lot more of an artistic approach to post processing these days but I am conscious of overdoing any processing work and it took me quite a long time, with a few breaks in between, to get this photo to represent how I remembered this moment. I hope you like the final result and hope that you will enjoy other photos that I will be posting in the near future. Let me know what you think and I have to say - it is good to be back!
