I started the Faroe Islands series a while back with the distant view of the Risin og Kellingin sea stacks and cliffs of Eiðiskollur, as seen from the beach in Tjørnuvík, a small village in the north of Streymoy island. I come to the end at the same location but with a closer look at the cliffs. I do not often get to use my 70-200mm lens, far less than I would like to use it in fact. This was a perfect moment to bring this lens out to get in close to the steeply rising headland, especially with beautiful golden light illuminating the grasses on top. I could have probably taken this photo with my standard 24-105mm lens but it had unfortunately died on me while we were still in Iceland and therefore I was limited to 16-35mm and 70-200mm lenses. That was not a such bad thing as it made me make different composition choices and try to see everything from different perspectives in terms of photography.

While I was taking photos of the wider view with the beach and stream in the foreground, I kept my eyes on these cliffs and I was checking to see what they looked like when the sunlight broke through the clouds and shined in that directions. Once I was happy with the photos I took with my wide angle lens, I switched to the telephoto and took a number of shots to get a feel for the conditions and to work out a good composition in case I got the light I was hoping for. I tried some slightly wider composition and also zoomed in further to see if I could focus more on the sea stacks. If there was any light illuminating the stacks, they could have looked really good but that did not happen and I decided to zoom back out a little.

From that moment, it was very much a matter of patience to see if that light could really come through and hit the top of the headland. A couple of times I thought I got as good as it was going to get but then I saw this lovely strong golden sunlight shining on the hill and that was just what I was looking for here. Previously dull looking autumn grasses came to life and they contrasted superbly with the dark surroundings and cliffs. There was still enough of ambient light to retain good detail and texture in dark areas with the sea stacks visible against brighter water and clouds behind them.

The resulting image sums up very well the trip to Faroe Islands for me. We saw plenty of magnificent landscapes through the dark and gloomy weather, as well as the occasional bursts of sunlight and clarity. We enjoyed our visit very much and dearly hope to return one day, if it will ever be possible again. If you live closer to the Faroes then I definitely recommend a visit because they are absolutely spectacular and we only just glimpsed their beauty over the few days we were able to stay there.
