Light Shines Through

Beautiful glowing morning light shines through the fog and rural fields near Augusta in Western Australia. It was a perfect sunrise to wake up to. Cool morning air, almost no wind, mist making its way across the fields and into the bay at the top of the frame, and superb sunlight illuminating the entire landscape. We stayed at this location a year before and while we did not encounter conditions like this, we enjoyed the stay and we returned in winter 2022 hoping that we would witness a bit of morning fog. Winter is probably the season with the most chance of fog in this area and weather turned out to be very favourable this year. After couple of days of rain, the temperatures dropped in the morning and with sunny conditions predicted the scene was set up perfectly.

I touched in my previous post about more minimalist side of photography and a "simpler" approach. This photo is another example of that. I am not going to say it was an easy or simple photo to take but it was very straight forward and required very little processing afterwards. I did not even have to get out of our accommodation other than walking out onto the patio and sitting down to enjoy this view. Sometimes it just all comes together, especially when one is at the right place at the right time.

The main consideration was whether to go wide angle or telephoto and where to focus my attention when deciding on the composition. After taking two or three wide angle photos just get a feel for the scene, and also because that was the lens already attached to my camera, I liked what I saw on the back screen. I also knew that to get the most of my vision for this scene, I would have to switch to longer lens. Once again, I went to my 70-200mm lens but that just did not seem to be quite enough, so I ended up also attaching a converter to extend my reach. That opened up a lot more compositional choices with my lens becoming 140-400mm. I could choose to go slightly wider or to focus on very specific parts of the landscape where I thought that the light and mood were particularly engaging.

It is very rare that you would see an image taken at 300mm from me, but layers of trees and fog looked really good when zoomed in and I was very happy when I saw this come through on the viewfinder. I thought that the line of thicker trees in the foreground framed the scene nicely at the bottom before the light took on brighter tonality as my eyes moved towards the top. The middle part is the one which fascinated me the most with beautiful light beams and clouds of fog almost dancing around the trees. These layers and progression of light also added to the feeling of depth in the landscape. It was a very multi-dimensional scene in my eyes and I was hoping to be able to convey that perception in this photo.

A little bonus for the eagled eyed folk amongst us. There are at least twenty kangaroos scattered around the fields including two or three in the immediate foreground. I know this is only a small sized image, but you might just about be able to spot them if you look hard enough. That was another aspect of the beauty of this scene, which I did not mention. There was wildlife aplenty with the afore mentioned kangaroos, kookaburras, many parrots and cockatoos and other birds roaming around and making the usual morning racket and I loved it. That was the kind of morning that I could wake up to any time.
