Experience of Silence

Quiet, misty morning over Frankland River in the southern parts of Western Australia. Sun was only just beginning to break through the thick cover of fog at the beginning of a mellow autumn day. I spent the entire morning, from dawn until around 9am, chasing around the paddock and bushland where we stayed. The surrounding area was covered in glorious fog, thick and dense, which made some very moody and atmospheric photos.

I was so caught up with chasing ghost trees and colourful patches of heather that I did not make it down to the river until the fog was already beginning to thin out. The sun was starting to push through the clouds and it was getting brighter by the minute from the gloom of the earlier hours. Still there was enough of that mood left lingering in the air, for me to take a few photos by the riverside. I inspected this spot a day earlier, and knew that it could a possibility given good conditions. It was a busy and somewhat cluttered in places though, so I also had that at the back of my mind, while I was looking for simpler compositions. When I finally arrived on the shore, I did like this scene a lot, and I think that I was able to manoeuvre myself around sufficiently to minimise the clutter, especially in the foreground. I liked how the river open up enough before my eyes, and also the dead trees present to the left and further along the river bed.

Exposure wise, it was a slightly tricky scene to photograph. The light glow from the sun was becoming larger and more pronounced as I was taking the photos. The shadows were quite dull and dark in places. One thing I wanted to avoid was a large area of dark shadows because in these conditions there would almost be no detail there. While it was very still and quiet at the water level, there was a gentle breeze moving branches just a touch a bit higher up. That posed a bit of a challenge for exposure blending, which I needed to do later in post processing. Luckily, that was mostly limited to the tree visible on the right side of the image. Not much other processing that my standard contrast adjustments, and dodging and burning, was required.

This will be my last post for a couple of months. I am taking a break to do a bit of travelling. I will definitely looking for more conditions like today's photo during our trip. I should be back online towards the end of November although, knowing me, it will most likely be a little bit later. We will see. It always takes me a bit of time to get back into daily rhythm after we return. I hope to catch up with all of you when I get back. Until then, farewell and take care!
